Blame it on the Benjamin: How to understand money issues as a communication in the therapeutic relationship
Presented by Tiffany McLain

Description:

How do I address my client’s unpaid balance?
Am I really worth this fee?
My client was sick - should I still charge her for the late cancel?!
When it comes to understanding the role of money in the clinical hour, we therapists can find ourselves overwhelmed. Anxiety, frustration, shame, resentment, guilt - all of these emotions are par for the course when it comes to discussing money issues with our clients.
In this course, Tiffany McLain will help you understand the symbolic function of money within the treatment. Money actions are one of the primary ways our clients communicate unconscious thoughts, feelings, and patterns. By “listening” to what our clients “say” via their money behavior, clinicians can move beyond fear and instead begin to utilize conversations around money as a clinical tool that can expand your insight into your client’s internal world.

This talk will be about the issue of how to understand money issues as communication in the therapeutic relationship.  How it is created, how it manifests itself, what it can lead to, and what can be done to prevent or reduce it.

Learning objectives:
At the conclusion of this intermediate-level program, participants will be able to:
1. Utilize discussion around fee to gain understanding about client’s interpersonal patterns.
2. Identify how their own countertransference feelings can be an impediment to client progress.
3. Use the frame/practice policies as a strategic tool when considering therapeutic interventions.
