The LGBTQ of Creating an Affirming Practice
Presented by John Sovec
Friday, June 10 2022, 9AM PST
OVERVIEW:Living openly as an LGBTQ person can be an empowering experience which can also have negative impacts on mental health status that can be exacerbated by cis-hetero normative environments where LGBTQ people experience harassment based on sexual orientation and gender expression. And sometimes this shows up in the care of even the most well meaning clinicians.
This workshop will explore a model of clinical care that addresses the impact of sexual minority status on mental, emotional, and physical health. Participants will address the impact of LGBTQ minority status on mental health, explore community alienation, coping mechanism to avoid LGBTQ identity stress, and explore active steps that can be taken to create affirming environments.
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this 1-hour presentation, attendees will be able to:
1) Analyze experiences of growing up LGBTQ
2) Demonstrate awareness of the power of language in communicating respectfully with the LGBTQ community
3) Implement three skills in a respectful and clinically sound manner to affirm LGBTQ clients
4) Apply concepts developed during the workshop to the clinical setting with respect to cultural and social construct
