Rethinking Bad Behavior in Children

Hosted by Kendra Delahooke, LMFT

Friday, December 10, 2021, 9AM PST

OVERVIEW:
Sadly, many approaches used in treating children with social-emotional and behavioral challenges are still heavily focused on behaviors. While behaviors play an important role in understanding what is happening with a child, they are only a piece of the pie. In this training you will learn to look "beneath" a behavior and understand the root cause of why a child is acting out. Thanks to important theories based in neuroscience such as The Polyvagal Theory, we now know how to best support and respond to a child in distress and what can cause more damage. We will cover topics including discipline, the power of co-regulation, and how to best support parents of children with challenging behaviors.

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this 1-hour presentation, attendees will be able to:1) Understand the root cause of bad behaviors in children
2) Learn about the power of a child's autonomic nervous system
3) Name three ways to co-regulate with a child
4) Identify 3 strategies to best support parents of difficult children

Kendra Delahooke is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a specialty in treating anxiety and behavioral disorders in children. After completing her graduate training hours at treatment centers across Los Angeles, she realized the treatment models she was being taught didn't have an appreciation of the autonomic nervous system in children. Frustrated by this exclusion, she then completed training in several somatic based modalities including DIR Floortime and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy in order to bring a more comprehensive, holistic approach to the children and parents she treats in her private practice. In addition to working with clients, Kendra enjoys bringing psychoeducation beyond the therapy room and is the founder of The Happy Nervous System Podcast.
