Helping Clients Identify and Manage Burnout:
Assessment, Management, and Prevention Strategies

OVERVIEW:
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented challenges and disruptions on a global scale. While the public health crisis has impacted the workforce at large, the current climate stands to exacerbate health issues among an already stressed-out generation of professionals who constantly feel the pressure to do more. With competing personal and professional demands, the modern work environment is putting people at a higher risk of developing burnout.
While burnout is not a diagnosable condition in the DSM, it is a widely-studied syndrome and has reached epidemic proportions. In fact, according to a recent survey, 74% of full-time employees report feeling burned out at work at least some of the time (Gallup, 2021). This presentation will explore recent research about burnout and help clinicians understand the risk factors, symptoms, and differential diagnoses. The training will conclude with strategies for clinicians to help their clients prevent or manage burnout.

- Define burnout and understand its three interrelated dimensions
Identify at least three environmental risk factors and three individual risk factors that put a person at higher risk of developing burnout - Understand the psychological, physiological, and behavioral symptoms of burnout
- Differentiate between burnout and other diagnoses, including MDD and GAD
- Create strategies to prevent or combat burnout for clients who present with mild to severe symptoms

Ilona Salmons, Ed.D., LMFT is a psychotherapist in private practice in Los Angeles who works with high-achieving professionals and organizations to promote mental wellness in the workplace. She specializes in helping clients cope with burnout and chronic stress, as well as relational issues. Ilona received her B.A. in Psychology from UCLA and her M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine. She obtained her Doctorate in Organizational Leadership at Pepperdine University, where she focused her research on wellness in the workplace and published her dissertation, Best Practices for Managing Burnout in Attorneys. She is also a state-qualified professor with the Los Angeles Community College District, where she teaches psychology and professional development courses.
