“Hypnosis is a relaxing, naturally occurring state of mind, which happens to us everyday.” (Advancing Ideas, Inc.; 2003). Notice how, when you’re driving in your car your mind sometimes begins to wander and you miss your stop or forget for a second where you’re going . . . that’s hypnosis. Watching a movie, becoming absorbed in a task, or just before you wake up or fall asleep: these are all times when you can become naturally hypnotized.
Basically, what hypnosis does is bypass the conscious mind, our critical thinking mind, and addresses our subconscious mind. Our subconscious mind has no preconceptions or judgments and is open to new and positive ideas. In our conscious mind, we constantly analyze and criticize all thoughts that travel through it and decide whether or not they fit into our belief system. Our unconscious mind supports these beliefs and maintains the responses that go along with them.
While under hypnosis, you can never be persuaded to do something against your basic morals or belief system. In hypnosis, when positive thoughts are introduced to the unconscious mind, it accepts them as true and acts accordingly. Hypnosis is used for a number of issues including: overcoming bad habits, pain control, removing fears, anxiety, and phobias, improving relaxation, counteracting negative thoughts, and self-improvement, to name a few.
Hypnotherapy is for anyone who has struggled with change in their life and can be an excellent adjunct to the therapeutic process.
